The way I understand it, LED backlighting allows for control over the actual
color temperature of the light source itself, whereas the current crop of
LCDs uses a fluorescent backlight whose color temperature cannot be altered.
Being able to change the light source directly in that manner avoids the
need to change the display's color temperature by means of the graphic
card's LUT. This way, the resulting color profile produces results that are
smoother, with less banding and/or other kinds of distortion.
