Dear ColorSync List members,
The brightest 10% of colors appear indistinguishable from white on my
Mac. (i.e. any Lab color with a lightness over 90).
I have attempted various fixes and experiments using ColorSync and
have been unable to find a solution. Below are the results of these
attempts. Any insight you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Using Mac OS 10.4.9, Radeon 7500 AGP 4X (1.5 V) graphics card,
Quicksilver G4 2001, VGA.
Initially I expected the problem was related to settings for the
monitor (Dell E207WFP LCD via VGA). However, adjustment of the
monitor settings made no difference in revealing the highlights. I
switched monitors with another computer. The problem recurred with
the other monitor, while the Dell displayed the same images perfectly
(relatively perfectly) on the other computer.
Mind-bogglingly, when I attempted to calibrate the display via
Display Calibration Assistant, I was unable to get the "grey oval" to
appear in the initial "Set Up" step, despite setting the monitor to
maximum contrast and brightness.
I opened one the "highlight" images in ColorSync and tried many
different profiles. They produced subtle differences but none
revealed the highlights. Using the ColorSync sliders, I was able to
reveal the highlights by radically decreasing the brightness or
increasing the gamma or reducing the black point, but these changes
ruined the overall image. It seemed like I needed to increase the
white point, but it was already set to maximum.
Thank you for taking a moment to read this.
