Meaning at the time the Gray Tone Aim Targets are calculated either in
software or manually. Before going back to press to test.

Sorta'. The gray balance aims are either:

1) 0a*, -1b*
or
2) dependent on paper white and the color of a 100, 100, 100, 0 patch.

number 2 goes like this:

a* = a*p x ((L*s - L*300) / (L*p - L*300))

b* = b*p x ((L*s - L*300) / (L*p - L* 300))

where:

a*p = a* of the paper white
b*p = b* of the paper white
L*s = L* of the the measured gray patch (ie 50c, 40m, 40y, 0k) as taken from the P2P target
L*p = L* of the paper white
L*300 = L* of a patch of 100c, 100m, 100y, 0k

This creates a sliding scale in which the gray moves from paper white toward the gray of the shadow.
