Hi Stanley,
If you follow some basics of color management, you can maximize accuracy and minimize color correction when it comes to fine art reproduction. Having been Thomas Kinkade's photographer/retoucher for three years, I can speak from experience.
I have set up art repro studios with digital cameras by controlling the camera curve, camera profile and lighting effects. Results are repeatable and they make a profit selling great reproductions.
First I set up three or four camera positions to reproduce several sizes of canvas. At each marked camera position I photograph a black and white image on canvas and set a camera curve to capture all the tones, gray balance and contrast of the original when printed on a color managed/profiled proof printer.
Then I photograph a Gretag chart and create a profile for each camera position and curve.
Finally, I recommend Robin Meyer's Equalight Photoshop extension. This easy to use plug-in saves hours of retouching by equalizing the light fall-off inherent with photographing large paintings. I would pay ten times the cost for this labor saving tool.
You will always have to color correct the hues of paints and pigments that the camera sees differently than the eye. If the tone/detail, contrast and gray balance of your reproducitons are accurate, then fine tuning color hues is much simpler to achieve for a good color match. This system keeps retouching to a minimum by standardizing tone and gray reproduction. Client subjective corrections are what they are but if tone and gray are accurate, color corrections are usually minimal.
Also, if you have a painter that uses a typical pallete, (unlike Mr. Kinkade), you can have them create a cusotm Gretag-like chart that you can measure and profile for additional accuracy for your camera profile.
