Scott,
You must concede that "metamerism" does not even begin to compare to "color inconstancy" in terms of how directly it conveys its meaning.
Tell then non-initiated that this or that constitutes a "metameric match" or a "metameric failure," or that there is an issue with metamerism somewhere in a process -- and you'l either get a blank stare or a question along the lines of: "Meta...what?!"
And it's strange that you would have such a concern for clarity to the end user when using "color inconstancy", but not when using "metamerism". :-)

"Color inconsistency" is not a proper terminology, as far as I know.
