Oakley,
Both EFI Colorproof and Caldera are excellent suggestions for the Mac
side, the Caldera being a bit more powerful for production work. The
cost may be a problem for your friend. One issue that comes up with
some lower-cost RIPs (such as the Colorburst OEM version) is that you
can't use third-party profiles or even turn off color management
(allowing you to do the color transforms first in Photoshop or
Illustrator, for example), let alone do your own linearizations.
Which means you're stuck with using whatever substrates are are
supported or something "similar" to a supported material and hand-
tweaking the color after that. Not the most pleasant or productive
way to spend one's time.

Hi All
A friend ask me for a recommendation of a RIP for his
Design Business.
Thought I would ask for help on this one.
He has 4 or 5 designers working in PhotoShop and
InDesign.[CS3]
They make Final Prints for Signs and PrePress proofs
for printing.
They have an Epson Model 10,000 Printer using the Dye
Ink set.
They do not want to go to a Windows server for the
RIP.
I normally use ColorTuner Pro, an iCColor
Spectrophotometer and ProfileMaker Pro for color
work. Therefore I am not that familiar with Mac based
RIPS. I do have a friend who uses EFI Designer
Edition, on a Mac, but it doesn't appear to be very
adjustable.
Money is an issue here. [They have done NO color
management up to this point.]
Please help point me in the right direction on this
journey.
Thanks
Oakley

I saw mention of Measure Tool here which reminded me about a bug I
found in
the Spot feature of MT in v5.02 from the ProfileMaker suite for
Windows. I
haven't remembered yet to test it under Mac.
If you use Measure Tool in the Spot mode for Colorimetric measurements
you'll see that the default setting in the pull down menu says
"Delta-E" but
the actual values reported are using Delta-E 2000. To set Delta-E
(or any
of the flavours in between), you need to pull down and select Delta-
E 2000
and then select again the one you want. Try it.
v5.08 exhibits the same problem.
This was something I found and reported to Gretag from v5.02. I'm
pretty
sure I tried it in at least two or three point versions of v4. Gretag
acknowledged the problem but didn't seem too motivated to do
anything about
it probably because of the impending take-over at that time by X-
Rite when
they were staring ot on their world domination tour.
