Apologies for not originally stating the situation more precisely.
I'd been away from the problem for awhile and didn't prepare carefully
for the original post.
The problem has to do with choice of output profile. In the first
print dialog, I select Photoshop manages color and choose a profile
for the paper I'm going to print on. In the following print driver
dialog (this is Leopard, two dialog boxes in order to print), I select
no color management and I specify the paper type. Then I can hit
Preview, or I can hit Print.
The interesting thing happens when I select an output profile other
than for, say, Matte or Watercolor paper. Neither the print nor the
Preview display is acceptable, though they match up pretty well --
this is a known problem as far as the printer is concerned -- but if I
select a glossy profile or a luster profile (and the corresponding
paper), then the Preview display and the print match up pretty well
and are acceptable. So, I suppose what I'm talking about, really, is
bad printer profiles for matte or watercolor papers. But these
profiles definitely do affect what Preview shows on the screen. My
camera BTW produces Adobe 1998 images, and my PS is set to use Adobe
1998 as the working space.

If the image has an embedded profile then that is used to match the
image to the display's profile.
