Greetings All,

I would as your narrow web printer to supply you with:

1 - Printed solid patches of the CMYK inks they are using. If they are controlling their presses this would be no problem for them.
2 - Ask them what TVI they are printing at the 50%. Remember that a 50% on most flexo presses, using film to make their plate, will print at 80 or more percent. They need to have a workflow that compensates for this. Digital plates also need a compensation, just different.

With these tools you can figure out how close they will print to SWOP. Since flexo has no standards for ink you may find that their solids may be close to SWOP. If your flexo printer works with a good ink company they can help them create an ink set that, taking the paper into account, will allow them to print close to SWOP if TVI and the other variables (many) are kept in check.

G7 and FLEXO:
In the flexo world there are challenges to using G7 methodology and the ink set specified by GracolSpec2007. The most daunting one in my opinion is the paper - we have sooooo many to chose from. I have chosen to use the most popular semi gloss as a starting point and my dE's to the Gracol Spec are:

C - 1.75
M - 0.71
Y - 1.43
K - 1.72

Since we have 6 plants across the nation, I have been "lucky" (some might call this a sick definition of lucky) enough to have started G7 methodology over 3 plants; 10 presses (3 different manufacturers); 4 ink companies (2 UV and 2 water based); 3 different plates; 2 different stocks; a variety of press tooling and press operators with skill levels. WIth some highlight challenges because of the two different stocks (one on the yellow side and one on the blue side) I have been quite pleased with the results.

I believe V4 of FIRST will include LAB values that will be based on Gracol2006. V4 is due to be out at this years FTA Forum in April. As Flexo printers we are often asked to match the graphics on the product label to the graphics on the box that holds the product. I think with some limitations, following the G7 methodology and the Gracol spec for color will help us tremendous in these matching efforts.

-Bill-
