Color laser printer dilemma — Part 2

Hello to all,

First, I'd like thank those who have shared their advice in response to my last set of questions: Scott Martin, Karsten Kruger, and Brian Lawler. Your comments have been a tremendous help during this process. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Second, the funding has been approved to actually purchase a new device; and the research task has fallen to me. Naturally there has been a small flurry of vendors wanting to make proposals — which has led to the following short list of recommended printers. If it's not too much trouble, I would appreciate anyone's comments if they have knowledge or experience with any of the following candidates from a color management, quality, or reliability standpoint.

Option 1) Xerox Phaser 7760/DX. New, out of the box, and accompanied by PhaserMatch 4.0. Naturally, I plan on lobbying to have it professionally color-managed.

Option 2) Ricoh MP C2500 New/w embedded RIP

Option 3) Canon ImagePress C1 New with options for a T1 imagePRESS Server /w command workstation or Q1 imagePRESS Server /w command workstation

Option 4) IKON CPP 550 New with options for a Fiery embedded controller /w command workstation or a Fiery PRO80 controller /w command workstation

Options 3 and 4 seem to be a little overkill to me because I've seen them both billed as being digital presses. Since we aren't a print- for-profit department, I'm not convinced at this point that the expense of leasing these devices is justifiable in relation to the kind of work that we do here.

Currently, with the information that I have, a color-managed Phaser 7760 seems to be the most logical choice.

Thanks for your patience and support.

-Dean
