Wow, mo. That sounds like a rather peremptory judgment.
Unfortunately I call it as I see it from this chair. Not that I like
what I see.
I'm not sure that I agree with you. Designers, for example, want
the results that color management offers, but I agree that most
seem to expect those as a freebie or for a song. But savvy
production people understand its usefulness and its value.
Yes, color management is so bewildering to most that the only way
REAL money can be made is to dumb it down and can it for general use.
The cost vs. benefits for the average person can not justify high
dollar hardware and software set ups. Getting a good monitor puck is
a no brainer for most, but developing dongle protected software for
the general user is not a good business model and I think this is
part of the problem Xrite is facing.
I doubt that this means that "there is no money in color
management", though it is true that it is a tough sell, oftentimes,
as I had the opportunity to find out for myself 9 years ago when I
lobbied for it for many months at a SF design firm.
It's a tough sell because it take way too long and is far to complex
for the average user to understand custom ground output profiles.
Again the benefit does not justify the costs to the masses. Color
geeks on the other hand are a different story, but a company can not
live on a select few for very long.
Xrite needs diversification which they were starting to accomplish,
but the high end toys do not have enough profit margin for the
company to keep cranking out new stuff. The demand is just not there.
