Interesting! I'm seeing the opposite from where I stand. Designers can loose tons of time and materials to a poorly color managed workflow and I'm seeing lots of interest to embrace technology there. Design groups are getting hip to CM, using 2006 SWOP profiles, are bringing in calibrated inkjet/RIP proofing systems so they can make their own SWOP proofs, and are saying goodbye to print vendors that aren't G7 method calibrated. I'm seeing designers educating printers about the importance of CM and using their business as leverage. Some print shops are so blown away by the quality of the design agency's proofs and the match they are getting elsewhere that it makes them realize they need to get their own act together!

Some of the largest agencies have had a hard time coming into the modern age and have struggled with web design integration, Quark to InDesign migration, acceptance of inkjet and color management. It's the smarter and often smaller shops that embraced the web and InDesign early-on that tend to use CM wisely and are growing. In a similar fashion, some of the largest print companies aren't moving forward with G7 calibration but the little print shops are gaining ground by doing so. I find it ironic that the big guys with the money often don't have the sense to spend it as wisely and the younger/smaller/ more ambitious guys.
