For 8 bit color, yes.

For 10 bit color, I don't think it would really matter. 1.0 (which actually means simply getting rid of gamma completely) would probably provide the same visual performance, but would reduce complexity, which is nice. But I certainly wouldn't be opposed to L*, either.
