Uli,
There are two kinds of users, regardless of OS or hardware : those that care
about the color they see on their monitors and those that don't. You and I
and most of the folks on this List seem to belong to the first kind, we care
about the color we see on our expensive and fancy-calibrated monitors. For
us, we have learn to live *above* what Apple and MS have decided should be
the gamma adjustment. We calibrated our screen the way we feel most logical,
2.2 for some, 1.8 for others, and yet L* for the rest of this group. I too
feel there should be some independent body deciding on this business but
it's interesting that this need is only coming about now, at this point in
the early history of CMS development. Why favor one gamma value over the
other? Possibly because of politics but when looked at with a cold temper,
strictly based on scientific evidence, 2.2 seems to me the only logical
choice -- if the decision must be make only on some "ideal" gamma number.
But keep in mind that we're in the era of dE2000: should we really limit
ourselve to an outdated transfer function when we can have the real thing?
L*? Since everything is transformed into L* internally anyway.
Oh! For the first kinds of users don't really care about how many profiles
we can fit on a harpin so anything the second kind of users should be fine
for them. Right?
