Thank's for the clarification.
I don't feel there is anything "natural" about a given choice of
gamma at the OS level either.
No, of course it isn't. Again, I never used the term "natural". It's
simply a decision of the OS vendors. Of course, that also means that
here and now it's a given fact for their customers.
Either you believe that, for the good of mankind, Microsoft and
Apple (and whoever else) shall decide on the fate of an OS-
independent gamma function or you believe that, utilimately, that
decision better rests with the user.
Which camp are you in?
I'm not sure about your alternative - the user simply cannot decide
that e.g. Mac OS X will have a gamma of L*. Only Apple can.
So my position is that, of course, there should be *one* gamma
standard everywhere. I'd prefer a neutral standard organization to
make that decision rather than Apple or Microsoft (or simply
"evolutional convergence" ;-) ), but that's a slightly different point.
My point in this discussion was a different one: how should a third-
party vendor such as X-Rite deal the fact that here and now Apple uses
1.8 and Microsoft uses 2.2? My reply to that question was that denying/
ignoring the current schisma (i.e. setting 2.2 on both platforms)
doesn't solve the issue, but just creates even more annoyances for the
users.
I hope I've cleared that up now. :-)
Bye
Uli
