Thomas,
we used to turn "enhance contrast" off in basICColor display
automatically before calibrating the monitor. This worked fine under
Tiger (and earlier), but had some nasty side effects under Leopard.
Apple must have changed the structure of the (undocumented) command. I
wish they´d make that command officially available and document it, so
that we could use it again.
One other functionality we are using on MacBooks though is the
brightness control of the backlight. Thus we avoid a loss of steps in
R, G and B when reducing luminance during calibration. This is the
closest thing to "hardware calibration" we can do with Apple displays.
Best regards,
Karl Koch

The first thing I do with Mac laptops is find that setting and turn
it off. I wish I could lock it off. I also wish there was a
numeric value to the setting that could be recorded and used to
reset the monitor if it gets changed.
Do check that in the universal access control panel k´have the
"enhance contrast" set to Normal. This can be changes by typing a
certain keyboard combo so can be turned on inadvertently and will
wreck havoc.
This is one thing I would like to be able to permanently turn off.
