Dear Friends,
This is a tangential (to say the least) topic for this list; however
those of you who are involved in programming profile making solutions
for digital cameras might be interested. The library described below
provides direct access to raw data and is available for both Mac and
Windows platforms. This means a profiler can contain a portion that
reads linear raw data directly, verifies exposure and other issues,
and gives "go - no go" for the target shot. It also means that a
profiling application being based on multi-channel true raw data can
be developed independently for future integration with raw converters.
We would be glad to discuss possible workflows and provide technical
support.
=====================
In order to facilitate development of independent raw processing
software we published LibRaw project, with goals and objectives as
following:
Creating and maintaining LibRaw in order to "get a library based on
dcraw, only better". Thus:
1. To "librarize" dcraw, i.e., to develop a stable and consistent API
suitable for other applications (RAW converters, data analyzers,
panorama stitchers, etc.).
2. To divide processing into independent parts (groups of API calls)
- Reading, decoding, and unpacking of RAW data: this is the main
functionality of LibRaw
- Data conversions: interpolation, white balance, etc.
- File output of the processing results.
The latter two groups of functions are maintained primarily for dcraw
compatibility testing.
3. To improve the procedures of RAW data retrieval and decoding
4. To supply other developers with a "framework" (freeware and open-
source), e.g., for experimenting with their own methods of RAW data
processing (interpolation, noise reduction, white balance, etc.), so
that they could create their own GUI programs and interfaces without
developing the entire RAW converter.
5. To ensure easy modification for code synchronization with dcraw
releases.
LibRaw is based on the source codes of the dcraw utility, where part
of drawbacks have already been eliminated and part will be fixed in
future. The users of the library are provided with API to be built
into their software programs.
LibRaw distribution is subject to GNU GPL v3 terms; licensing under
other terms is also possible.

Your suggestions re API calls, tools missing, site contents, as well
as papers on different aspects of raw processing and digital
photography are most welcome - the site has a forum and publishing
facilities
