ProfileMaker is out of my price range for now

Given its price/performance ratio, I wouldn't recommend it anyhow. As far as scanner profiling goes and as long as you stick to IT8.7 targets, it's identical to EZColor, anyhow.

and I think i1Match may be as well.

The (very high-quality) i1 Match scanner module, OTOH, is a complete bargain at 100 Euro (don't know US$ out of my head) *IF* (and of course that's a big IF) you own an i1 Pro.

Do they offer an evaluation period that I don't know about?

Not that I'm aware of. (For the Mac Life review, I was provided with test versions from the manufacturers.)

An overview of profiling packages on the Hutchcolor site makes a similar point about Monaco scanner profiles:

Good to know.

Performing this test was quite an effort, and although I tried as hard as I could, given the complexity of the factors involved, I could never be 100% sure that I didn't overlook something. So it's always good if the results are confirmed by completely independent sources.

Converting to working RGB from a Monaco scanner profile can blow out highlights if you use Perceptual, and can look a
little dark if you use Relative. (This of course can be adjusted in Photoshop.)"

Color conversions that I *have to* correct in Photoshop are not exactly my idea of working color management, though ... ;-)

Out of curiosity, I made some profiles from the reflective targets and reference files that Robert Rock posted to the list recently, then I calculated DeltaE.

I couldn't find the profiles you refer to, but some values surprise me - the bad max value of Argyll as well as the incredibly good values of inCamera.

This was delta E calculated against the targets the profiles were built from, was it?
(And "Monaco" referred to EZColor?)
