I learned to leave the additional length on the strips years ago. It
certainly does make a difference, both before and after I've found.
I purchased the machine new but that was ages ago and it's never been
back for re-calibration. Although it hasn't been used an awful lot and
was babied when it was. Profiles created with the machine have been
matching reference targets without fail so I haven't as yet seen the
need to return the unit for re-calibration.
X-rite's customer service said it sounds like the lamps are going dim.
X-rite (US) quoted me something like $540 for a rebuild and re-
calibrate which seems reasonable, but then they referred me to
Canadian depot when I gave them my location and suddenly the price
jumped 40% and the turnaround extended another 50% in time.
Man do I get ticked off when I get bent over by a company just for
being Canadian. I know the additional time is to send it to Michigan
when I send it to them and the additional cost is just a kick in the
nuts.

PS: Yes the lens is clean and clear.

My dtp41UV has been generating a substantial amount of strip read
errors lately and just last night it refused to read the
calibration strip. Restarts, saving sessions, etc seem to do no
good. Is it possible the drive motor may have gone south, or is
there a belt that might be slipping inside? Is there anything that
can be done by the layman to crank out a few quick profiles for
some samples on a new media?
I'm using profilemaker pro 4.5. I know there tends to be an error
when you scramble the patches (which I have done), but it must be
more than that as the inability to read the calibration strip is
proof the problem does not lie simply with the black or white gap
indicators.
I'm hoping to maybe find a solution before monday (dream on newbie!).
Just saw this post today... sorry!
My DTP41 has always been very fussy about proper strip length beyond
the test patches. Make sure there's enough material left, out to the
ends of the strips as set up in the page size dialogue.
Other than that, if you can't get a calibration strip read, the
device won't be operationally reliable. It'll need to go back for
repair / recalibration.
You say you're a newbie? Did you purchase the device as rebuilt or
used? What's the date on the supplied calibration strip? That would
indicate the last time the device was put back to factory specs.
