I don't really see how you can be "somewhere in between". Either
the intent is absolute (not adaptation to the media white point),
or it's relative (full adaptation to the white point). While
something in between can be created, there is no ICC label for it
(no "partial relative colorimetric" intent is available.)

Yes, this is a well known phenomenon not only from scanner profiling
(especially printers come to mind). Profiles with a tight delta E fit
may look quite ugly when applied to a Granger rainbow, for instance,
because smoothness was sacrificed to curve fitting.
Yes, but it's more than that. They might not only be smoother,
but actually more accurate.
