One reason many patches are useful -in my experience- is to sound out
the real gamut boundary of the printer.

I only use scanning xy spectros so the size of the targets really
matters little to me. However I had a lot of reading issues from
operator irregularity back in the days I used the i1, so clearly the
number of patches in a target needs to take the reading method into
account.
