Hi Rick,

Yes it is possible to get the best of both world!
GCR can help, but it is not the only way to do it.
The package used to make such devicelink profile is called PerfX Device Link Pro™. For RGB to CMYK you can set many options for RGB to CMYK, like converting neutral RGB value to Black only. Since Photoshop CS4 seams to be locked for CMYK to CMYK only, I am using an other tool called PerfX Color Server TIFF™, which fully supports ICC devicelink profiles for RGB to CMYK and CMYK to CMYK.

You can send me a small image offline and will convert it so you can see what is does.

So if it did support RGB-to-CMYK device links, then it would be possible to set up a conversion where you could map non-neutrals to one normal profile, while holding neutrals to the mapping of a Maximum GCR profile? Interesting. Can you describe more how you would set this up, and what control it would be possible to have for interpolating the near-neutral areas? And with what device-link package?

I've been doing this with actions, but am not completely satisfied with the mitigation of the near-neutral areas that don't fall clearly into one domain or the other.

Anyone got information or detailed spec about ICC DeviceLink profile support / compatibility with Adobe Photoshop CS4?

It seems to work only for CMYK to CMYK, not for RGB to CMYK (to keep neutral RGB on the K plate for example).

Also, be careful to Assign the output profile (used to create the device link) in order to get accurate preview after the conversion!
