Oh! Didn't Argyll created output profiles at one time from as low as 60
patches?
You can do that if you really want to. There are a couple of
approaches that can be used together:
Do a preliminary profile, and use that to create
a test chart that is optimised to the device.
Create an MPP (Model Print Profile) from a small number of patches,
and then use it to create an ICC profile.
The MPP profile is Neugebaeur based, and can be created from
ridiculously few patches, but it won't model a device as accurately
as a CLUT based ICC profile, unless it is very well behaved. That's
the usual trade-off :- if you assume certain device behaviour, you can
get away with a smaller number of patches. If you assume nothing about
the device, then you simply have to measure it everywhere. You can
make more efficient use of a number of patches if they anticipate
the device behaviour.
It could be that the Munki software uses a slightly more flexible
model than MPP profiles, but not as general as what CLUT ICC profiles
can represent (even though it may use that for its final output).
