Hi Jesse,

The actual reason for your problem most probably is that transparency (necessary for the drop shadow effect got flattened (as transparency is not allowed in PDF/X-1 or PDF/X-3), and in that flattening process an overprinting white vector or image mask object got created (which will knock out process but should not knock out spot). Your output process is not able to render overprints adequately and thus you see the problem you are seeing. Nevertheless, this is just guess work without having seen the actual PDF file.

So if you don't mind - I'd like to have a look at it (and would then let you know what I find out). Please use

Does anyone know an easy way to avoid spot colors from being "punched out" behind text with a drop shadow or other effect that's applied in InDesign CS3? We're making PDF's using PDFX1a with the settings altered to allow leaving images "as is" as far as CM is concerned, and sending them to HP designjets using the onyx 7.1 rip. Our PDF's have a mix of rgb and cmyk images and graphics. I've been pushing to use PDFx3. Would that make any difference in our workflow?

This link shows the problem in a print.
