Hi Rob,
I think I understand your situation now. Mostly, the gray balance
problem is addressed in the profile. First be sure that the ground
has been prepared well in the RIP, especially sensible limits on each
color in an absolute sense (limit each channel before the hue hooks
too much and the saturation starts decreasing) and relative to each
other. This prevents Profilemaker from having to twist the curves too
hard to get good neutrals and smooth gradations. Then linearize and
set TIL at a level low enough to prevent bleeding, loss of gloss,
etc. In Profilemaker use GCR "4" or even "Max K," starting your black
at anywhere from 0 to 5% The two light black/gray inks in this
printer allow this without getting "peppered" highlights, so take
advantage of it. Assuming you've already limited your ink in the RIP,
leave the TIL alone here. I predict success, but if you have further
questions feel free to contact me off-list.
Good luck!

Thanks Mike
I need to use this RIP because of the way it integrates with other
software
I am using (I tested some of the others you mentioned and liked
them but
they would have needed heavy customization to work in the way I
needed).
I am in the position of being in an environment that is both 'fine
art' and
high production so I need the best of both worlds!
I have Profile Maker and the advanced options for profiling the RIP
so I
think I have the tools. (I already have a smoother gradient with
the RIP
than the Epson driver but suspect that may have to be played off
against
neutrality).
I just don't want to put a lot of hours and ink into something that
is not
possible because say, the driver lays down ink in a way that the
rip cannot.
If there is nothing like that going on then I'll look at the Epson
output in
terms of ink usage in the greys and see if I can reverse engineer
it in the
RIP starting with GCR - Thanks.
Rob.
