I'm driving an Epson Pro 3800 with Colorburst RIP (not the version that
comes with the printer) and I'm using Profilemaker with exact the same
settings Mike described below with great results. I got much better skin
tones and gray balance with the RIP than using the Epson driver. Using
Colorburst I also get prints slightly more sharpened than using Epson
driver, too. To visualize the "hooks" I use ColorThink and a
linearization chart measured with PM 5.0. All the calibration, measuring
and profiling can be done in a few hours, considering expending some
time to allow the patches dry.
Best regards,
Lorenzo

I think I understand your situation now. Mostly, the gray balance
problem is addressed in the profile. First be sure that the ground has
been prepared well in the RIP, especially sensible limits on each
color in an absolute sense (limit each channel before the hue hooks
too much and the saturation starts decreasing) and relative to each
other. This prevents Profilemaker from having to twist the curves too
hard to get good neutrals and smooth gradations. Then linearize and
set TIL at a level low enough to prevent bleeding, loss of gloss, etc.
In Profilemaker use GCR "4" or even "Max K," starting your black at
anywhere from 0 to 5% The two light black/gray inks in this printer
allow this without getting "peppered" highlights, so take advantage of
it. Assuming you've already limited your ink in the RIP, leave the TIL
alone here. I predict success, but if you have further questions feel
free to contact me off-list.
