That sounds fair!

Thanks for the added info.

What I need to do next is a detailed comparison between the Photoshop clipping flag, the Argyll xicclu values, and what is measured. So, at the moment, I cannot say which one (Photoshop or xicclu) is closer to "reality" (on average!), with reality being the printed result, which needs to be done with a fresh calibration, controlled conditions, etc.

As already noted, the purposes are slightly different between the two approaches. xicclu will indicate in/out of gamut for individual colors using the chosen A2B table as the reference, and any provided total ink limit. The degree of out of gamut is in reference to it's choice of clipping (by default a minimal delta E type). It doesn't take into account any gamut mapping that would occur in transformation of a B2A table, nor the exact choice of ink limiting in a B2A. In addition, a CMYK B2A table will often restrict the gamut in dark colors to give better continuity (smoothness) of device value interpolation (Harold would use the term "tapering"), which is a constraint spot colors conversions don't have. In practice the xicclu result is basically a colorimetric test, and so would only be applied to a gamut mapping situation if the gamut mapping was applied separately and prior to the in/out of gamut check.
