Well, the terminology is Adobe's, not mine, but I actually think it
is the best default for a typical CMYK workflow. Most printers want
final CMYK, and will ignore profiles anyway.
Would these be the same printers that either can't or won't supply
the CMYK specs that will enable files to be supplied in the correct
colour space so that unnecessary "colour correction" becomes
necessary , whining about 'incorrect CMYK' but at the same time
refusing to accept RGB files for their own conversion, or still
common practice , or accepting RGB and then converting to 'generic
CMYK ' in Photoshop 4 and then badmouthing the photographers?
Generally, I want to avoid layout programs from deciding to change
my CMYK without my specific consent, while at the same time,
leaving less chance of an unwanted conversion happening downstream.
So I will rarely send anything but PDFs, which I find most vendors
that I (or, more accurately, my clients) deal with (all major
players in the printing industry) specifically request to have
profiles removed.
Ah ...the stripping of profiles thing. Sitting a technical
committees that for some years have been addressing this issue , one
thing has been crystal clear. The fundamental reason for stripping
profiles has been the issue of embedded profiles upsetting some
RIPs . I'm glad to say that the more enlightened have now agreed that
this is a problem with the RIP , not with colour management , and it
is the responsibility of those operating these RIPs to be aware of
the problems and either upgrade or institute a workaround . It is
neither fair nor professional to expect the rest of the industry to
compromise best practice because of a lack of responsibility or
knowledge or reasonable investment . The stripping of profiles is
akin to removing the address on a letter and then blaming the
postman for not delivering it to the right destination ( not my
analogy ...stolen from somebody much brighter who may be on this
list :-) ) .

I don't know about others, but I am frankly getting sick and tired

It's 2008, not 1998. Those of us who know better must stop
condoning this sort of backwardness. Raise a fuss, ask to switch
over to other vendors who know their stuff -- but let's do
something. Things need to move forward, please, really.
Much as 'me too ' comments are not always considered good etiquette I
have to agree with Marco here .
End of rant. <g>
Me too! <BG>
