The Docucolor 240/250/260 series represents Xerox's latest
generation technology. It's a modular system with a variety of
options (3 RIPS (the most affordable "bustled" RIP is dang good)
Just curious here: I don't work with a lot of laser machines, so I've
only been one place that had 240's. But at one ad agency client that
had two of them, with the 'bustled' Fiery RIP, it had the common
Fiery interface but no setting to turn the output profile to 'none'
as is common with most devices that I've seen that use some iteration
of this RIP.
I called the dealer that sold them these machines and they said that
feature wasn't available on the bustled RIP version. So, in essence,
the machines were not able to be profiled.
Also, the machine had a set of densitometers/spectrophotometers that
it recognized for calibration that all had the same characteristic of
being no longer on the market. DTP 32 and DTP41 and DTP 22 as I
recall, but particularly no iOne. I again asked the same dealer about
doing the standard 'through the glass' calibration, and was told that
that calibration was so substandard they recommended not using it;
that it would result in images with a "badly overall blue cast." Of
course not so much of a problem if you can then profile...but of
course if you can't...
Overall I was pretty impressed with the machines' ability to print
and to stay consistent, but I wasn't impressed at all with the
bustled RIP, for obvious reasons.
Was this dealer just unknowledgeable?
Is there some hidden-in-the-depths way to turn off the output
profiles? Were they just misguided about the 'through-the-glass'
calibration?
Like I said, just curious.

Mike Adams
