Lorenzo,
I thought BCRA tiles were the best, all around, absolute color references in
the world today. Always thought they were. How could it be otherwise, right?
Until I found out how X-Rite and Techkon have sets of their own, both
traceable to their respective national calibration bodies, NIST and PTB, not
bearing as close a resemblance to my set of NRC-calibrated BCRA tiles as I
thought they would. That was a big shocker for me. I later learnt that
British Ceramics, the maker of these tiles, does not make them to some
absolute standard but rather within a certain pratical tolerance. So, AFAIK,
all color measuring instruments manufacturer all use sets of tiles for
reference *within* their organization but the extent to which these
measurements can be carried today. Unless someone, on day, which is
possible, comes up with a way to relate all these varying sets of tiles
together, mathematically, for the advancement of color development. But that
would take the collective willingness of the color community to do so. And
we know when is that going to happen...
