Edward,

The only way I can think of doing this is to separate the images by
distribution of levels, in the hope of separating the low key images from
the normal key images from the high key images, if such thing was possible.
Say, LK = heavy concentration of 0-92 brightness Levels, and so on.

But then, in my view, ALL images ought to be viewed against the same neutral
background (the way Photoshop does it curently) for the adaptation to work
independently of image content. Otherwise, for the purpose of managing the
appearance of color, I don't think it would be right. Unless you are after a
different reproduction objective?
