Hi Paul,
An introduction to digital camera colour processing (including
discussions of both camera-rendered images and unrendered output)
can be found in Chapter 12 of the Digital Color Imaging Handbook
(CRC Press). The authors are Ken Parulski and Kevin Spaulding of
Kodak, and the article is entitled "Color image processing for
digital cameras". With some digging you may be able to find it
published as a separate article.

This is actually an excellent reference. From the same CRC Handbook,
Chapter 4 is also a classic:
"Color management for digital imaging systems" by Edward J.
Giorgianni, Thomas E. Madden, and Kevin E. Spaulding of the Eastman
Kodak Company. This became the foundation for ISO+22028-1-2004,
"Photography and graphic technology —
Extended colour encodings for digital image storage, manipulation and
interchange — Part 1: Architecture and requirements." When you read
ROMM in these publications, think ProPhoto - they're one and the same.
I have a number of versions of related articles that I've collected
over the years - contact me off-list, Paul, if you're interested.
