Aparently you aren't keeping abreast of products in this area, Andrew.
PrintFIX PRO is no longer being sold. Spyder3Print, on the other hand, is sold to
people with a concern about correcting for the nonlinearities of their printers,
most of them building 500 to 1000 patch profiles, and many of them tweaking
and adjusting those profiles for the output they desire. The only 'world of
hurt' that Spyder3Print and Spyder3Studio are in, is difficulty in producing them
fast enough to meet demand.
But don't confuse that with the market for the Munki; X-Rite makes it very
clear that its for low end users, consumers, amateurs, etc... those looking for,
as you note, 'faster and fewer', which is bacisly the market that the older
EyeOne Photo Lite was aiming for: low patch targets. There is no magic to
replace enough info about printer output, in the form of measured patches. And I
find the newer inkjet printers with secondary ink colors in addition to the
primaries, require even more patches than models with fewer ink colors, as the
extra inks add more gamut, but at the cost of less linear output, requiring more
sampling to control.
