I can certainly see what the 'spin' is going to be, but the fact remains (and
its one that members of this list above all others should understand): you
can't correct for what you don't measure, you can only assume, and hope that the
assumptions result in smoothness, not bad corrections. In particular, the new
Canon and HP printers with CMYRGB inksets make wonderful prints, but require
controlling the transitions between these inks, and they require them in
different places in the various densities for differing media, with differing
characteristics and ink loading. Thats what custom ICC profiles are for. And thats
why generous numbers of patches are needed. No under the hood magic makes up
for that because... you can't correct for what you don't measure.

I find the quick switch from "Your product doesn't measure enough patches" to
"You don't need all those patches" to be rather interesting. We'll just keep
on trying to produce enough product to meet our customer's demands.
