If we're talking comparing two "identical" prints, then visual approval
may be good enough (assuming good lighting and the viewer isn't
colorblind). Often there are color corrections done between two printing
cycles that would necessitate more objective than subjective approval.
Just as often, there is only one proof to view, in which case visual
approval says little of the print's integrity.

This is obviously more applicable to proofing rather than photo
printing, but I for one would love to see objective print verification
when receiving pretty pictures from a photographer that we in the print
world are told to match. ;)
