Hello list. I have a question about using the Dither option when performing
color conversions and bit-depth conversions. I fully understand what the
dither is and why it is used. My question is about when to apply it. I would
think that it should only be applied during the last step of a conversion.
For example, let¹s say I work in 16-bit ProPhoto RGB color space. I deliver
my file to a printer converted to 8-bit Adobe RGB (1998). Should I apply the
dither knowing that the printer will perform at least one additional
conversion to CMYK? It seems to me that once the dither is applied that
subsequent conversions, which might or might not apply another dither, will
be less than optimal.
So the question is do you think it¹s better to apply multiple dithers or to
allow quantization errors in the early steps followed by dither in the last
step?
