Most users cannot judge by eye if something has drifted off since the last time they printed.

If a print drifts in the forest and no one sees it, who cares?

IF you're a geek (or even someone with an instrument), its pretty dare easy
to measure two prints and evaluate the drift. But if no one sees it, its
hardly a major problem (considering all the other TRUE problems we have out
there in photo land).

I don't know about the photo printing world but it matters a lot in the proofing world where it may not be immediately apparent that the proof has drifted until it hits press days/weeks later. You need to know that the proof is accurate almost immediately whether you can see the difference or not. Eyes are good comparative instruments but they're not good in an absolute sense.

Just because you can't see the difference doesn't mean it hasn't drifted and that it's not going to be a problem down the road.
