Hi Roger,
Yes, what you say has merit for the individual, "prosumer" user.
I'm referring to businesses, for example, design shops - some of which bill
in the millions annually. Currently, I'm trying to help such a shop after
they dumped an Epson 4000 with bundled RIP and replaced it with 2 Epson
R2400s. (!)
Almost all their files are built in Illustrator (think lots of flat color
areas, frequently originating as "PMS swatches"). So I get those phone calls
that start with "Why doesn't my print match what I see on my monitor?"
They want to supply 'guide prints' to a variety of clients & ad agencies;
their files are destined for output at various printers unknown. For such a
client, I don't think there's a better approach than encouraging them to
print via a RIP and target GRACol or SWOP 2006 (this is in the USA). Of
course, if there's a better approach, I'm all ears... ;-)
Warning: potential rant ahead --
It's amazing to me that even individual photographers will pop for color
management hardware, training, and RIPs for their printers, etc., while
design & agency shops don't - despite being much larger businesses, with
potentially a lot more at stake as they are preparing files for offset
printing.
-- end rant ;-)
Have a good weekend.

John
