Roy makes a very good point about how many bits are really needed. Even if a printer does have on-board 16-bit processing, that won't necessarily automatically translate into better quality.

An example from the input side is the 14-bit raw files from recent DSLRs. The noise level generally exceeds 4 raw levels, i.e., the bottom 2 bits contain noise. So you can get the same quality raw file if the camera had only written out 12 bits per pixel to the CF/SD card (therefore saving smaller raw files) and letting the raw converter append 2 bits of noise.

If in doubt, test ...
