There are several issues being mixed in this discussion.
What is the color and bit depth of the monitor and printer and wether
they have
been calibrated is critical.
Some commercial rips and newer epson printers can print in 16 bits.
Most Raw files are 12 or 14 bit files.
When editing, banding occurs in the monitor due to display capacity,
which is often less than the full file.
New monitors have look up tables for 10 or 12 bit color and programs
to display an approximate color to the file.
Some better monitors may not be limited. New LED monitors claim 120%
plus of Adobe 1998 RGB color space,
and will show the entire file with room to spare.
Since editing can happen in a dense data file the finished 8 bit file
need not show banding, unless the data was lean
to begin with. A 16 bit file that has week shadows, may really have 6
bit values below middle grey. These bits are not helped by 16 bit files.
