Yes, Better Light, ErgoSoft, Nikon, HP introduced various combinations of
fine art reproduction systems that use various combinations of spectral
measurements of the colorants in the artwork, spectral measurement of the illumination,
careful camera characterization, etc to reduce the general problem of
accurate scene colorimetry estimation. Its a similar kind of optimization to those we
have been talking about in the camera profiling, and spectro vs colorimeter
discussions. If you know what you are measuring, then reproducing it is much
easier. A good analogy is that of analytical densitometry. Some of you might
already know that similar approches has been used for quite some time at various
institutions, but AFAIK, these are the first commercialy-available for-sale
solutions. These HP-SDK-based solutions are taking the right approach and the
results look pretty reasonable from what I could tell (under the awful lighting
available at fotokina). Kudos to Robin and the others who are bringing this to
market.
