From my understanding and from what I have been told by an Adobe

ability to function at maximum performance.
I think if we replace the term "linear" with "uniform" it makes far
better sense in what I was trying to describe and it was not my
intention to provide disinformation to the original inquiry.
So I guess I should pose a question to the forum. Is Adobe RGB a
better color space then sRGB? If not, then why did Adobe create it
for it's applications?
A linear color space would have a TRC of 1.0 (it would be linear: see http://www.ppmag.com/reviews/200612_rodneycm.pdf)
As to a "better" working space, it all depends on the gamut of the
scene and then capture device, as well as the gamut of the output
device. Can you define some or all of them from the get-go or not?
As for digital capture using modern DSLR's, at least with the number
of Canon's I've shot with, there's all kinds of scene gamut the Raw
file can be rendered to produce where an Adobe RGB encoding will clip
colors. This is easily visible when using ACR and toggling the
encoding color spaces while examining the nice color clipping
indicators in the Histogram.
That at least the two Adobe Raw converters use ProPhoto RGB primaries,
based on the above, I encode using ProPhoto RGB (using its non linear
TRC).
