sRGB is based upon the average monitor color space. Monitor color spaces are not linear. sRGB is not the best working space to use to edit images because it's not linear. Adobe RGB is far more linear because it has been created to compensate for how Photoshop's power curve has been tweaked / created and has not changed to the best of my knowledge since it's inception.
