Well, RelCol is the *only* type of conversion possible between
matrix-based profiles.
As Karl put it there are ways to get arround this
So, how do you prevent the possible clipping of saturated detail in
this intermediate RGB-to-RGB conversion?
Device Link profiles. But that is not the idea. I actually want to see
which parts of the image are lost due to clipping.
But I have to admit that my primary focus is offset or ISOcoated
optimized digital printing.
Fine. Nothing wrong with that. Still, I'm not sure I see the
advantages offered by that intermediate conversion.
Well, my output is offset or ISOcoated. There is no way to prevent
clipping, desaturation and/or compression when going from ProPhoto to
offset in case of highly saturated colors in an image. **It will
happen**. But I want control. I want to know how and where my image is
changed and perhaps adjust something.
If I exactly know how my image will print I can go to CMYK directly.
But sometimes the printing process is not fixed yet and CMYK
separation is too early in the workflow. I need a well behaved and
smaller RGB where clipping, desaturation and/or compression are less
likely to have strong visual impact when going to offset - eciRGB_v2.
So I use RelCol to eciRGB_v2 as a first step and then judge the
result. In most cases the larger color space is not used by an image.
If that holds true for a particular image, I am done. Otherwise I have
to start the rocket science engine and do some wizardry ;-)
Have a nice weekend,
Karsten
