I'm a photographer.
I have been using a LaCie 321 and calibrating with the LaCie EyeOne
software and colormeter.
The results have been very good.
X-Rite has a new product unfortunately named Colormunki.
Why unfortunate? Don't you love munkis (monkeys)? I've been wanting
one as a pet for quite some time. The kids like the idea to but The
Wife still isn't having any of it. :-)
X-Rite claims that the device is a spectrophotometer and will create
a superior profile than a colormeter.
Ding! Round one of the "which is better for display calibration/
profiling, a spectro or a colorimeter?" Common wisdom says that
colorimeters are every bit the equal and perhaps better than a spectro
for display (only) calibration/profiling.
My 3 cents? I'm not comfortable with this whole notion that you have
to have specially designed colorimeters tuned to individual display
chromaticities and what not. This issue has come up from time-to-time
as we've gone from CRT to LCD display and now from "conventional" flat-
panel back-lighting to the new LED units like the HP DreamColor that
was/is recently discussed. I like the idea of using a true spectro
that isn't dependent on individual display tunings. Having said that,
I've also seen where a spectro is less than ideal for smooth shadow
transitions/calibration when used with non-DDC-compliant displays.
Spectros are a helluva lot faster (measuring time/speed) than a
colorimeter also.
Is this correct or is it marketing spin?
Spin.
Does anyone have experience with the specific device?
Nobody I know (color management colleagues that do this for a living)
use one of these things for their OWN work although they might be
selling them to customers. They might be perfectly fine but I remain
skeptical.
