Martin,
Open up your MX4 and look at the dE stats and you'll probably find
that 0/100/0/100 and 100/0/0/100 are a couple of the worst patches.
There's a couple of ways you might be able to improve things; 1) use a
much larger chart (4,000+ patches) to build the gamut file for the MX4
or 2) you may have to modify your starting MX3 files. Look at the
Printer Gradation values in the MX3 calibration file you're using and
see if the magenta channel is maxed out to 100%.
I've got a 10,000 patch chart that I use for gamut files that really
seems to help (generally on the 2nd iteration you're done with no more
improvements after that). It's about 4 pages on an iSis so it's not
all that bad. Let me know if you're interested in it.
Later,
Terry

If you are, what sort of results are you getting for patch A22 --
it's ruining my approval stickers by scoring 4.4dE on ISO Coated
v2 :-(
Running GMG SemiMatte paper through an Epson 9880. Everything apart
from patch A22 is incredibly tight.
I guess is a gamut issue: A22 is one of only two patches that are
really close to the bottom of the color space in MediaWedge3:
SAMPLE_NAME SAMPLE_ID CMYK_C CMYK_M CMYK_Y CMYK_K LAB_L LAB_A LAB_B
A22 22 0 100 0 100 10.42 13.93 1.35
B22 46 100 0 0 100 10.41 -8.20 -10.25
the the next two dark patches are significantly lighter:
SAMPLE_NAME SAMPLE_ID CMYK_C CMYK_M CMYK_Y CMYK_K LAB_L LAB_A LAB_B
A21 21 0 0 0 100 16.00 0.00 0.00
C22 70 0 0 100 100 15.71 -3.08 11.68
How about other dark patches (taken directly from FOGRA39)?:
SAMPLE_ID CMYK_C CMYK_M CMYK_Y CMYK_K LAB_L LAB_A LAB_B
1262 0 100 0 100 10.42 13.93 1.35
1265 40 100 0 100 9.02 10.92 -1.89
1266 100 0 0 100 10.41 -8.20 -10.25
1267 100 40 0 100 9.08 -2.40 -9.23
1268 100 100 0 100 7.88 5.79 -5.94
1271 0 100 40 100 10.73 11.61 4.24
1274 40 100 40 100 9.56 8.14 1.37
1275 100 0 40 100 10.65 -11.29 -4.22
1276 100 40 40 100 9.57 -5.16 -4.00
1277 100 100 40 100 8.23 2.66 -2.38
1283 40 100 100 100 10.13 4.96 4.97
1285 100 40 100 100 10.16 -7.44 2.67
1286 100 100 100 100 8.71 -0.07 2.06
1399 100 85 85 100 8.88 -0.95 1.18
1400 80 65 65 100 9.74 -1.01 0.31
BTW.: IMHO it's a pity that FOGRA didn't include 100/85/85/100 or
100/100/100/100 into the new MediaWedge -- these patches have the
least Delta E to 0/0/0, i.e they are most dark and neutral colors in
FOGRA39 and good benchmarks for the lower gamut boundary of a
proofing systems:
SAMPLE_ID CMYK_C CMYK_M CMYK_Y CMYK_K LAB_L LAB_A LAB_B DE00_to0
1286 100 100 100 100 8.71 -0.07 2.06 5.542540
1399 100 85 85 100 8.88 -0.95 1.18 5.575778
