On the other hand, this also means that Adobe, with its proprietary
technology, still can't improve on the best Canon factory profile,
which, as you might remember, is a standard ICC profile.
Boy, you sure don't want to further investigate the possibilities do
you? Are you aware you can EDIT the above profile further, assuming
your goal is to work at building or in this case, modifying profiles
simply to come up with numbers to hit
Of course I'm aware of that, and it is true for ICC profiles such as
those from Canon and ProfileMaker, as well.
So yes, probably all profiles could achieve even better values by
tweaking. However, since you can spend hours upon hours on tweaking a
single profile, without ever being sure that you finally arrived at
"the" best setting, it is basically impossible to do this in a
comparative test that deals with much more than 100 profiles
(remember?) and needs to deliver reproducible results. Therefore, it
is common practice for tests like this to assume that vendors tried to
deliver the best they could by default, and stick to factory settings.
(instead of rendering).
I'm well aware that numbers might not tell the whole story, and of
course also evaluated the results visually. However, apart from the
fact that this evaluation is bound to be more subjective, it's also
harder to communicate in a post like this. So as long as my visual
evaluation is mostly in accordance with my measurement results (which
it was in this case), I simply report the numbers, as these are
unambiguous.
On a personal note, as I wrote, I intentionally stayed away from this
thread to calm things down. However, I felt that I now had to offer
additional facts and therefore should post again. I would much
appreciate if you could reply in a calm and factual manner to avoid
turning this into another flamewar.
Bye
Uli
