Bottom line, I hear many names thrown about...Colorburst, ONYX, and

Do you have a favorite or recommendation? I do like to make my own
profiles
too, since I often experiment with different papers. So I need to be
able to
easily incorporate profiling into the RIP. For example, with
StudioPrint, I
use their add-on module called ColorGPS for this purpose.
In my opinion, it's pretty difficult to beat ColorBurst X-Proof for
it's combination of printing quality and "bang for the buck".
Considering it comes bundled with a very good linearization/
measurement utility (basically an OEM version of X-Rite ColorPort) AND
a profiling application (again, OEM of X-Rite/Monaco Profiler), it's a
real good value. Combine that with it's excellent printing quality on
Epson printers, it makes for an excellent general purpose ICC-based
photo and proofing system. You supply the spectrophotometer and you've
got everything you need.
I can't help mention that my *favorite* RIP is GMG ColorProof but
that's if you only if you need that last bit of proofing accuracy.
While GMG *can* be used as a general purpose RIP these days (besides
it's own "proprietery" link profiles for both CMYK proofing and RGB
photo printing, it also supports standard ICC profiles as well), it's
generally a bit pricey and is only supported on the Windows OS plus
can have a bit of a learning curve. ColorBurst X-Photo/X-Proof is
available on both Mac and Windows OS's.
Hope this helps,
