And do you know why you can't see any differences?
The difference mode ist calculated channel by channel.
This results in an 100/100/100/100 difference image when two identical layers are compared.
This is more than black ;-) and a difference of 3 or 4 percent in all the channels delivers anymore an absolutely black.
For grayscale or RGB it's enough to see a difference on a well calibrated screen, but 4 channels over 95% will stay absolutely black on every screen.
But I wonder why you think the behavior changed. This ist the way PS works since the difference mode is implemented.
