So it looks like the best guess as to why they recommend CMYK has
nothing to
do with the OBC module, but just a CMYK workflow in general.
I did an article some time ago regarding metamerism (and color
constancy). A part of this is comparison of various substrates under
different light sources. Other than the abstract I measured a bunch of
prints for different printers on different papers and did comparisons
in regard to dE between different light sources.
www.pixl.dk there is a link on the front page in case anyone is
interested.
Among these samples (nr. two + three from the top on the sample set
page) an RGB profile and a CMYK profile built with a lot of K, from
the same printer on the same substrate.
It is pretty easy to see the advantages of CMYK profiles if you are
trying to get a uniform look of images under all (or certain)
illuminants on this.
While I understand the benefits of a CMYK workflow, there are also
major
benefits to an RGB workflow.
It's not a question of whether to use a CMYK or RGB workflow, it's
simply a matter of whether you define the black generation of your
printer profile (if you us ea RIp and build a CMYK profile) or whether
you let the printers internal engine do it (which is what happens if
you print with an RGB profile - or without a RIp generally). Most
Rip's can be set up to print both RGB and CMYK images through a CMYK
profile.
In our case, we must produce images that are
used in numerous media. When we print our guide prints, we have no
idea at
that time how the job will be printed (what type of paper, ink, size,
whether it's printed in the US w/SWOP standard, Europe w/GRACoL, or
China
w/completely unknown conditions). So we have no chance to benefit
from a
CMYK workflow and must use the RGB workflow.
You may want to investigate GMG's ColorMaster in a Box workflow <http://www.gmgcolor.com/english/solutions/colormaster-in-a-box.html

Farkas has a presentation explaining a bit about this on www.ECI.org
