The right setting is the one that provides a match to the print viewing

As for Eizo, my guess would be, higher you drive the display, less
lifespan out of the unit.
But this idea that 120-140cd/m2 is "ideal" is silly unless in the same
sentence, you define the viewing conditions and said conditions are such
that those settings produce a visual match.
"The comparison of a soft proof with a print or a hard copy proof is
specified in ISO 12646. The lighting conditions should comply with all
of the requirements of ISO 3664 : 2000. The luminance level has to be
adjusted to match the illuminance level of the monitor. The ideal
monitor illuminance level is greater than 120 cd / m2."

There is a simple correlation between viewing booth illuminance and
matching monitor luminance: illuminance [lx] = luminance [cd/m^2] * pi
I prefer 500 lx (ISO-3664 P2 practical print evaluation environment) and
160 cd/m^2.
